One word: anonymity.
Kids feel like they are somewhat untouchable on the internet, so they do many things they wouldn't be able to IRL due to the absence of RL boundaries.
You can't really blame them, they are just discovering themselves. It's like discovering your third member, at first you find your new discovery exciting, but as the years go on, you'll acknowledge that everyone of you kind has got one.
Many never get out of the childish, self-centered state, which is where a vast majority of these people still seem to roam in.
Basic method of dealing with immature behaviour: stop giving the infant the attention it desires. It works every time.
It's like a mother letting a baby continue to cry untill the child realises that mommy doesn't come by crying anymore.

If you are a parent perhaps you have heard of Ferber, Ferberizing, or the "cry it out" method for sleep training. Or maybe you have tried the "cry it out" method on your highly sensitive toddler in order to teach her to self-soothe. For those of you unfamiliar with the Ferber method it is where parents are encouraged to not respond or have a controlled response to a crying child. There is a great deal of controversy surrounding whether allowing your child or young infant cry it out is dangerous. Dr. Sears, a proponent of attachment parenting says the following on his website about the dangers of the Ferber method.
"Science tells us that when babies cry alone and unattended, they experience panic and anxiety. Their bodies and brains are flooded with adrenaline and cortisol stress hormones. Science has also found that when developing brain tissue is exposed to these hormones for prolonged periods these nerves won’t form connections to other nerves and will degenerate".
According to Dr. Gordon (2006), "Crying is an important elicitor of parental behavior which both initiates and propels the development of relationship with self and others". When parents respond sensitively to babies or young children's cries they help the child learn to adjust to distress and cope with states of hyper-arousal. Children who learn, early in life, to adjust to distress effectively are better able to regulate their emotions which contributes to a greater sense of well-being. Infants are not born with the ability to discriminate the meaning of facial expressions or emotions
