Found an old screenshot from my Rakion account — full trash gear, sword stuck at +0, and yet I remember genuinely believing I could beat cash whales like that. Looking back now, was there ever a real chance for free players, or were we all just coping hard back then?

If we’re being honest, free players never had a real chance. I tried to stick to F2P myself at first, but the second I saw the first "Fortune Wheel" event, I knew the game was designed to make non-spenders irrelevant. It was like trying to sit down at a high-stakes poker table with a couple of spare coins.

Not sure I fully agree. Events were actually pretty rewarding at first. If you played every day and farmed like crazy, you could still grab decent gear. I had full event armor at one point, and even managed to beat some cash players.

Yeah, but that was only before they started stacking cash shop bonuses on top of everything else. Farming was like playing a slot machine — technically you could hit the jackpot and get what you needed, but most of the time you just walked away with junk.

Funny you mention slots. I actually watched a few online casino reviews on YouTube recently, just to see how those work. The crazy thing is — even casinos list their payout rates. Rakion never told us what the actual odds were for any of those boxes or wheels.

That’s why I always check review sites before trying any online casino. There are decent ones out there like this one - https://somagyarkaszino.com/kaszino-velemenyek/robycasino/, where they break down the bonuses, real payout rates, even player complaints. Imagine if we had that kind of transparency for Rakion lootboxes back then.

I mean, sure, reviews are nice, but it’s still gambling either way. Whether it’s a game lootbox or a casino spin, you’re paying for a random outcome. The difference is just the packaging.

True, but at least with licensed casinos you know the rules upfront. Rakion’s lootboxes changed every patch. Rates could be 5% one day, 0.5% the next — and nobody ever told you.

I still think online casinos are worse. At least with Rakion you had gameplay. In a casino, once you spin and lose, that’s it — no way to skill your way out of a bad result.

That’s only if you play like a complete idiot. If you manage your bankroll, set limits, and actually understand the games, you can walk away up or at least break even. But if you just spam spins, yeah — you’ll lose everything.

That sounds like the same logic people used to defend heavy cash shop spending. "Just spend smart and you’ll be fine." We saw how that ended for a lot of players.

The difference is — in a real casino, at least you know exactly what you’re signing up for. Back in Rakion, they sold every box and wheel as "limited time" and "crazy value," and half the time they were worthless.

Fair point. The whole "limited-time offer" scam was everywhere. Every holiday event turned into a glorified cash grab. Christmas, Halloween, even random summer sales — all just more boxes.

Exactly. It got to a point where Rakion wasn’t even a game anymore. It was a casino disguised as a PvP arena. And at least in a real casino, you don’t pretend you’re playing a competitive sport.

So what are you saying? That modern F2P games should just embrace being casinos?

I’m saying if you’re going to spend money on pure randomness, you might as well do it somewhere that’s actually regulated and upfront about the odds. If I’m looking for that kind of rush, I’d rather read proper reviews, check payout rates, and know exactly what I’m getting into instead of blindly trusting some game’s cash shop.

I still can’t wrap my head around the idea that people actually enjoy online casinos. Feels like throwing money into a void and hoping for the best.

That’s only if you go in blind. If you watch a few review videos, understand how RTP works, and pick games that actually have decent payout potential, it’s more like a calculated risk. People do the same thing when they buy lootboxes — they just don’t admit it.

At the end of the day, it’s all gambling, no matter how you dress it up. I miss when games were just games — not storefronts with bonus PvP.

Same here. But if I have to choose between a game that hides its pay-to-win mechanics behind events and lootboxes, and a place that’s upfront about the risks and the odds, it’s pretty obvious which one’s being more honest.
